Tambuwal launches programme to enroll 1.2m children into schools

Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State on Tuesday launched an enrollment programme which would admit 1,268,000 new pupils into primary and junior secondary schools across the state.
The programme, launched at Bodinga town, headquarters of Bodinga Local Government Area of the state, was aimed at enhancing universal basic education to eligible children.

Tambuwal said it would also promote retention, completion and transition of students from basic and secondary levels to tertiary institutions in the state.
He added that ``government will strengthen the enrollment drive to ensure that it achieved its objectives.
``Parents will be supported with a conditional cash transfer programme to ensure they allow their children attend classes.
``To ensure further success, the government will deploy technology for biometric data capture of those enrolled in order to keep track of their school attendance and performance.
``Government will also take steps to address constraints and challenges that may arise while the children are in school.’’
In his remarks, UNICEF's Chief Field Officer in Sokoto, Mohammad Mohiuddin, said the enrollment campaign in the state was apt, considering the fact that Sokoto State had the highest number of primary school children that were out of school in the country, most of them girls.
He, however, said that Sokoto State was currently one of the five states in the North that was benefitting from UK and U.S. governments' funded Girls Education Project Phase 3.
In his remarks, the state’s Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr Jabbi Kilgori, said the theme for the enrollment drive is ''Catch them Early, Keep Them Long.''
He said that the campaign would be aggressively conducted to massively register children with special focus on girl-child, with a view to lay solid foundation on gender balance in schools.
