Violence: UN Women tasks religious, traditional leaders

Country Programme Director, UN Women, Dr Grace Ongile has called on religious leaders and traditional rulers to help end gender based violence in Nigeria by 2030.

Ongile made the appeal in an interview in Abuja.

She said the organisation has sought partnership with religious leaders, traditional rulers and community leaders to end violence against women and female children by building local structures.

According to her, the partnership is one of the strategies adopted by the UN Women in ending gender based violence in Nigeria.

Ongile also explained that partnering with the leaders was an important way of understanding the dynamics at the local level.

She said across the world violence against women and girls remained one of the most serious and the most tolerated human right violation.

She said a legal review would be required to support the efforts of the organisation especially in handling reported cases of violations of the rights of women.

The director urged that the laws that have been passed should be implemented in partnership with the government including the police.
