The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) in Plateau confirmed
that 17 poultry farms have been affected by the avian influenza with over
58,000 birds killed in the state.
The state Chairman of the association, John Dasar confirmed
this in an interview in Jos.
According to him, the recent outbreak of the disease, also
known as bird flu, has done more harm than good to poultry farmers in the
state.
He decried the fast spread of the disease and the sufferings
of farmers, saying that the farmers affected by the 2015 outbreak were yet to
be paid compensations by the government.
He, however, advised farmers to desist from any act capable
of bringing the poultry industry in the state to peril.
The Director, Veterinary Service in the Plateau Ministry of
Agriculture, Dr Doris Bitrus, warned farmers to desist from selling infected
birds to desperate marketers.
Bitrus, however, said that government had taken proactive
measures to contain and control further spread of the disease in the state.
She advised poultry farmers and live bird marketers to step
up bio-security measures within and around their farms and in the market areas.
