The Kaduna State Government says 16,000 women vendors to be engaged in the state’s free feeding programme for primary school pupils will earn N50 per meal.
Alhaji Shehu Adamu, the state’s Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, stated this on Thursday in Kaduna while interacting with some of the food vendors.
The commissioner said that the programme would be launched on Jan. 17.
The governor said that the programme was designed to provide one meal a day to about 1.8 million pupils in over 4,000 primary schools in the state.
The commissioner said that the vendors, drawn from each of the 255 wards in the state, have been organised into cooperative societies for the programme.
``The vendors will not earn monthly salary, but would be paid N50 per meal on weekly basis with a profit margin of N10 per plate.
``Every vendor would be responsible for the cooking implements she need to provide the meals to the number of pupils assigned to feed.
``In the same vein, every pupil is expected to bring a plate from home and a bottle of water as the programme did not make provisions for drinking water.
``Therefore, parents must ensure that they provide a plate and drinking water to their wards before sending them to school,’’ he said.
The commissioner further said that the school-based management committees, comprising parents and notable community leaders have been sensitised to support and monitor the performance of the programme.
He called on parents, teachers and all stakeholders to support the government to ensure the success of the programme.
