Onion Makes Us Cry', play against women violence sets for stage

Mr Jerry Adesewo, the producer of the play 'Onion makes us cry' says the play is aimed at sensitising and curbing violence against women in the society.


'Onion Makes Us Cry', which is written by Zainabu Jallo, and Directed by Oluwaseun Odukoya told the story of the inhuman way women are being maltreated in the society.

Adesewo, who is also the Artistic Director of Arojah Royal Theatre, the presenter of the play said this in Abuja.

He said that the play would be staged in celebration of the International Women Day coming up in March 8 at Cyprian Ekwensi Centre for Arts and Culture, Abuja.

According to him, the play is chosen following the criteria that the International Women Day drama series play must be written by a woman or has ‘Violence Against Women’ as the central theme.

"Onion makes us cry’ happens to be the most suitable play because it has dual importance that is written by a female and with the central theme of 'violence against women'.

"The play has three major characters which emphasises on the massive brutality on women and its effect on the society.

``The play will be staged in two categories, the Grand Performance and the Public Show, to come on stage on March 8 and March 12, respectively at 5p.m.

``The gate fee for the grand performance is N5, 000, while the public show goes for N3, 000," he said.

Adesewo said that there will be provision for different talks by some respectable women in the society to speak against the violation of women rights.

He said that he was optimistic that the play would help in creating understanding and educating not only the society but also the entirely public on the fight against violation of women rights in Nigeria.
