2 men in court for alleged possession of firearms

Two men, Terzungwe Shiaondo and Terver Apuu of Ugbema Village in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue, on Friday appeared in a Makurdi Magistrates' Court for alleged illegal possession of firearms.

Shiaondo and Apuu were arraigned on a three-count charge of possession of firearms, attempted culpable homicide and disturbance of public peace.

Prosecutor Moses Akoo told the court that he case was transferred from the Nigeria Police Divisional Headquarters, Buruku to the Police CID, Makurdi, through a letter on Jan. 19, 2016.

Akoo said the letter stated that on Jan. 19, personnel of Operation Zenda, Makurdi, led by one Sgt. Tyovenda Terdoo arrested the defendants at Buruku.

He said the letter stated that they were fighting and disturbing public peace.

The letter stated the defendants and others now at large publicly fought themselves at Ugbema junction and Shiaondo shot Apuu with a locally made pistol on his left hand.

The letter further stated that Apuu sustained serious bullet wounds and almost bled to death if not for the timely intervention of the police.

Shiaondo confessed he owned the gun with three rounds of live ammunition which he used to shoot Apuu, while Apuu admitted attacking Shiaondo with his gang members.

The prosecutor further said the offences contravened Sections 3(1) of the Robbery and Firearms Act, 2004 and 230 of the Benue State Laws, 2004.

No pleas were taken, but the prosecutor applied for adjournment on grounds that investigation was still ongoing in the matter.

The Magistrate, Mr Dan Ogo, remanded the defendants in prison custody, and adjourned the matter till March 2.
