Borno to partner with UN Human Council on rehabilitation of victims of insurgency

The Borno government said on Wednesday that would collaborate with the UN Human Right Council in the rehabilitation of victims of Boko Haram insurgency in the state.

Alhaji Usman Durkuwa, the Deputy Governor said this while receiving a team of UN rapporteurs on Human Rights in Maiduguri.
Durkuwa represented Gov. Kashim Shettima at the event.

``I want to commend the UN Human Right Council for its efforts in protecting the rights of women and children and ensuring their dignity
``Let me also commend the UN and other support group for intervention to the victims of insurgency in the North East,'' he said.
``I also want to solicit for support of the UN in the rehabilitation of the victims of the insurgency especially women and
children.
``This is most important as the state government had commenced rehabilitation of destroyed communities for resettlement''.
He said most of the victims suffered psychological problems which needed urgent support.
``Honestly we want to request you to visit some of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps to see things for yourselves so you can help in your little way,'' Durkuwa said.
The leader of the group Mrs Urmilla Bhoola had told the Deputy Governor that their visit was aimed at getting firsthand information on the Human Right situation in the state.
``We are independent experts appointed by the Human Right Council to which we will report back.
``We are grateful to Nigerian authorities for inviting us to come and to allow us to interact with government officials and civil society
organisations,'' Bhoola said.
She said that the team would assist in the treatment of girls and women who were freed from captivity.
``The essence is to help them regain their dignity and recover from the trauma which they suffer''.
