The Akwa Ibom Governorship Election Petition
Tribunal sitting in Abuja has concluded that there were verifiable
discrepancies in the election conducted in the state on 11th April.
The tribunal thus order a re-run in 18 local government areas of the state.
The
judgement was pronounced on Wednesday by Justice Sadiq Umar who ordered
the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct fresh
elections within 90 days.
However a specific date has not been fixed for the election re-run.
Tribunal
was also silent on the prayer of the petitioner, Umana Okon Umana,
seeking the invalidation of the election of Governor Emmanuel Udom, the
candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to results of the 11th April gubernatorial election in
Akwa-Ibom, Emmanuel who was declared winner of the election polled a
total of 996,071 votes, ahead of Umana, candidate of the All
Progressives Congress (APC) who got 89 865.
