Kogi Govt to begin the monitoring of flood prone Local Government Areas

The Kogi State Deputy Governor, and Chairman Flood Management
Committee, would from tomorrow begin the monitoring of flood prone
Local Government Areas of the State.

The disclosure to commence the visit to flood prone areas and to
ascertain the extent the flood have ravaged some communities was made
known after the meeting of the Flood Management Committee, held in
Lokoja .

According to a statement issued after the meeting Chaired by Yomi
Awoniyi, and attended by representatives of the affected area, seven
Local Government Areas in the state have so far been affected by the
flood.

The water level the committee said has risen to 9.28m, affected some
communities in Ajaokuta, Bassa, Idah, Ibaji, Ofu, Kogi and Lokoja
Local Government Areas.

The meeting which today discussed issues of documentation at the
expected camps to be set up for Internally Displaced Persons as from
Monday next week also discussed the issues of health care, and relief
materials for those that would be internally displaced.

The meeting also evaluated the level to which the flood has ravaged
the affected Local Government Areas, appealed to the Senior Special
Assistants of the affected Local Government Areas to engage town
criers and other means in sensitizing people living in flood prone
areas on the need to move to upland.

Awoniyi maintained that the State Government is more concern about
saving lives appealed to the people to heed government warnings to
relocate to safer places.
