EFCC arrests ex-president Jonathan's spokesman in corruption probe

Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency has arrested Reuben Abati, who was the former spokesman for ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

"We have arrested Reuben Abati and he is undergoing interrogation in connection with some issues bordering on graft," Economic and Financial Crimes Commission spokesman Wilson Uwuajaren told the AFP news agency.

Another EFCC official, who asked not to be named, said Mr Abati was “being questioned in relation to [an] ongoing investigation into the misappropriation of funds earmarked for arms to fight Boko Haram”, AFP reports.

Mr Abati is a popular columnist and former chairman of editorial board of Nigeria’s Guardian newspaper before joining Mr Jonathan’s government in 2011.

President Muhammudu Buhari has launched a wide-ranging campaign against corruption since his inauguration last year.

A number of prominent officials from the previous government have been arrested and put on trial, but some accuse the president of only targeting the opposition.
