Borno governor lauds UNHCR over humanitarian assistance

Gov. Kashim Shettima of Borno has commended the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for its humanitarian assistance to displaced persons in the North East Zone and neighbouring countries.

Shettima gave the commendation in Maiduguri when UNHCR Commissioner, Filippo Grandi, paid a working visit to the state on Sunday.

The governor said the humanitarian assistance offered by donor agencies had helped to reduce the effect of insurgency.

He, however, solicited for more support from the UN agency in the area of technical assistance to rehabilitate and resettle IDPs.

“Thousands of our people have been gruesomely killed, maimed, orphaned, widowed and displaced.

“Our economy has been distorted and stagnated.

“However, the people of Borno are known for resilience and optimism.

“I must acknowledge the gallantry of Nigerian armed forces and other security agencies for librating our people as the insurgents are now subdued and normalcy is gradually returning.

“The Borno government is therefore indebted to the Federal Government for the feat it has attained in enabling humanitarian intervention,” said Shettima, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government.

Shettima also said the state was still threatened by Boko Haram elements in some of the villages and their environs, adding that the military was on top of the situation.

Grandi, in his remarks, assured the governor of the agency’s continuous support  to other states ravaged by the insurgency.

He said that the purpose of his visit was to personally review the extent of displacement in the state and ascertain other areas of assistance.

According to him, the best way to win a war is to rehabilitate and empower those displaced by the war.

He urged the state government to take the issue of resettlement seriously.
