3 female legislators elect in Enugu, a plus for women in politics – Group

The Ndigbo Unity Forum (NUF), a socio-political pressure group, says that three female legislators elect in the Enugu State House of Assembly is a plus to women in the state.

The President of NUF, Mr Augustine Chukwudum, said this to the on Friday in Enugu while reacting to the level of women participation in the General Elections.

Three female candidates from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) clinched three state constituency seats, thus beating their close male rivals from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 24 House of Assembly seats in Enugu State.

Mrs Jane Eneh of the PDP clinched the Awgu North State Constituency seat by scoring 9,485 votes to beat her close male rival, Mr Anthony Udeh of the APC, who polled 442 votes.

Mrs Onyinye Ugwu of the PDP also clinched the Enugu South II (Enugu South Rural) State Constituency seat by gathering 10,711 votes to be beat her close male rival, Mr Ifeanyichukwu Chime of the APC that polled 1,094 votes.

Mrs Ethel Ugwuanyi of the PDP also clinched the Igbo-Eze North 1 State Constituency seat by garnering 14,911 votes to defeat her close male rival, Mr Okwudili Odo of the APC, who polled 803 votes.

Chukwudum stressed the need for political parties to massively support more women to contest for political position and participate in governance.

“I must thank political parties that sold aspirants expression forms to women at no cost before their various primaries and the General Elections.

“But there is more work to be done to galvanize more women to come out and take a stand and voice in politics especially pursuing those germane issues pertaining to women in the society.

“I believe that INEC, the National Orientation Agency, Civil Society Organisations as well as NGOs like NUF have a lot to do to ensure the increase in women participation in politics and governance at every level.

“International and regional organisations concerned about women welfare must start supporting and sponsoring advocacies towards women participation in politics.

“More women in politics will help to support or sponsor bills for their welfare and for easy passage at state and national legislative levels,’’ he said.
