Angelina Jolie to divorce Brad Pitt

Jolie and Pitt
Angelina Jolie is seeking a divorce from fellow Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt in a move that would end one of the world’s most-watched celebrity marriages.

In a divorce petition filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court and posted online Tuesday by CNN, Jolie asked the marriage be dissolved due to “irreconcilable differences.”

The court filing was made by celebrity divorce lawyer Laura Wasser under Jolie’s legal name, Angelina Jolie Pitt.

Celebrity news website TMZ previously reported the divorce filing, quoting Jolie’s entertainment attorney Robert Offer.

He said Jolie had made the decision “for the health of the family.”

Pitt is “very saddened” by the move, the actor said in a statement.

“What matters most now is the well being of our kids,” he said in a statement to People Magazine.

“I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time,” he said.

In the court filing, Jolie said the couple had separated on September 15 – barely two years after they were married in 2014.

Jolie requested sole physical custody of their six children, three of whom are adopted from other countries, with visitation rights for Pitt, CNN reported.

Jolie, who has three times topped Forbes’ list of Hollywood’s best-paid actresses, did not request spousal support from Pitt.

Jolie, 41, and Pitt, 52, met during the 2004 filming of the action movie “Mr and Mrs Smith,” playing a pair of secret agents unaware of each other’s careers. They quickly became the focus of paparazzi worldwide, and were nicknamed Brangelina as a couple.

The pair announced their engagement in 2012 and married in August 2014 in the south of France.

Jolie, who is the daughter of Hollywood actor Jon Voight, has become one of US cinema’s most reliable box-office draws in films including “Maleficent” (2014), “Changeling” (2008) and “Salt” (2010). She won a best supporting actress Oscar in 2000 for “Girl, Interrupted.”

At the same time she has built a parallel career as an activist, serving as a United Nations special envoy for refugee issues since 2012 and a UN goodwill ambassador from 2001-2012.

Her decision to undergo preventative surgeries, a double mastectomy in 2013 and the removal of her ovaries and fallopian tubes in 2015, made international headlines, which she used to raise awareness of a genetic disorder that can increase women’s risk of certain cancers.

A Hollywood heavyweight himself, Pitt has appeared in dozens of movies since the 1990s including “Moneyball,” “Inglourious Basterds” and the “Ocean’s Eleven” series.

He won an Oscar as producer of 2014’s best picture, “12 Years a Slave.”

The power couple most recently co-starred in the 2015 film “By The Sea,” written and directed by Jolie, about a couple trying to repair their marriage.

Jolie was previously married to actors Jonny Lee Miller from 1996-1999 and Billy Bob Thornton from 2000-2003. Pitt was married to actress Jennifer Aniston from 2000-2005.
