IPC calls for nominations for International Women's Day award

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has invited nominations from its membership for its annual International Women’s Day Recognition award.

An online portal Theinsidegames said that this year’s edition would be the fourth that the IPC had given out the award.


It said that the award was usually given to an individual who ``embodies the spirit of the Paralympics and who inspired women within it’’.

It added that the IPC would announce the winner of the award on March 8, a day set aside by the United Nations to mark the International Women’s Day.

The portal said that Tine Rindum-Teilmann, the Chairperson, IPC Women in Sport Committee, urged members to nominate individuals that had contributed immensely to the Paralympic Movement.

``This is the fourth year that we will present the International Women’s Day Recognition and in previous years, we have seen some of the most inspirational people receive the honour.

``We hope that it helps to highlight the great work carried out every day within the Paralympic Movement by and for women, and raise awareness of the opportunities for women and girls within Para-sport.

``I encourage all IPC members to look within their organisations for the unsung heroes who are helping to make a difference to participation and high performance sport.

``The Paralympic Movement should celebrate the achievements of strong women and those who contribute towards equality,’’ it said.

It recalled that Canadanian wheelchair racer, Chantal Petitclerc, a 14-time Paralympic gold medallist, won the award in 2016 for her work in Para-sport.

The 2014 prize went to Rima Batalova, the Vice-President of the Russian Paralympic Committee, with International Women’s Day falling during the Sochi 2014 Games.
